A picture of a common pair of shoes, like any you would find. However, a person knowledgeable in physics knows that something is always happening, even if you can't see it. And this takes us back to these shoes. Through my understanding of Newton's laws, I am aware that the shoes, the carpet under them, and even my backpack which is lurking partially out of sight are all engaged in a a physics tug-of-war. Countless small forces are acting upon those shoes, all balancing each other out. For example, the weight of my shoes, combined with atmospheric pressure and other miscellaneous forces, are pushing down on them. Most people are aware of this. Physics imparts the knowledge that when the shoes push at the carpet, the carpet pushes back. Newton's laws states that an object at rest which keeps on staying at rest must have a net force of zero, meaning that all the forces do indeed negate each other. This means that the carpet must be pushing back at the shoes, or else they'd go right through, somehow. However, the mind-blowing part comes when you realize that things like this are going on all the time with everything that has existed anywhere in the universe, ever. It's a delicate balancing act that is all around us, but one which we too often take for granted.
